Richard BaylissOne of the most versatile horn players of his generation, Richard Bayliss moves effortlessly from the elegance of Bach on period instruments to the bold, cinematic sound worlds of today’s leading composers — including Jonny Greenwood and Rob Simonsen.

Richard’s freelance career spans the full spectrum of horn playing, across both historical and modern instruments. A prominent figure in the early music world, he has been principal horn with the Gabrieli Consort & Players for over 20 years, contributing to numerous award-winning recordings and performances. He is regularly invited to appear as guest principal with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Hanover Band. Internationally, he performs frequently with {OH!} Orkiestra and Capella Cracoviensis, often as guest principal.

On the modern horn, Richard performs as principal horn with the London Contemporary Orchestra, a role that has led him into the world of film music. His playing can be heard on major releases including Deadpool & Wolverine, Saltburn, Thunderbolts, and Bugonia. He also features prominently in Greenwood’s striking score for The Power of the Dog, performing some of its most demanding and atmospheric solo passages.

A highly sought-after orchestral musician, Richard has appeared as guest principal with the Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Britten Sinfonia and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Further afield, he has performed as guest principal with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, among others.  Richard has featured as a soloist both in the UK and internationally with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Taipei Symphony Orchestra.

Beyond the concert platform, Richard has long been a familiar presence in London’s West End, performing in productions such as Shrek The Musical, Sinatra, Jesus Christ Superstar, My One and Only, West Side Story and The Sound of Music.

Richard is also a founding member of the Galliard Ensemble, one of the UK’s leading wind quintets, with whom he has recorded eight critically acclaimed discs — further proof that whether in the orchestra pit, the recording studio, or on the concert stage, Richard brings flair, flexibility and unmistakable musical personality to everything he plays.
